No less than three worshippers were killed when gunmen stormed the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Nkwegu, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, during the Christmas carol service.
The Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Nworie, who confirmed the killing on Monday, added that many worshippers were also injured.
Bishop Nworie described the incident as “sad and disheartening” and condemned the killing of the three worshippers, offering prayers for their souls and the injured.
One of the victims, a popular PoS operator at Nkwuagu Market, a source claimed, was talking on the phone while leaving the church and as soon as he stepped out of the church, the armed men fatally shot him.
Ebonyi State Police Command is yet to speak on the issue at the time of filing this report.
