The main focus of the Federal Road Safety Corps, this year will be on speed reduction.

Anambra State Sector Commander, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, made this known in his office at the command headquarters in Awka, the Anambra state capital.

Irelewuyi said, ” Our main focus for this year will be on speed reduction. We will try to caution our people as much as possible about the dangers of driving beyond 100 kilometres per hour. If you drive beyond that then you are putting yourself and all other road users at risk of getting involved in a crash.

“In addition to this, we will also look at other infractions that may cause crashes. We will pay particular attention to tyres, caution against driving under the influence of alcohol, embark on church/mosque advocacy and organise rallies. Our message is simple; drive to arrive alive.”

The Sector Commander assured Anambra citizens of free flow of traffic on roads in the state the ’ember months’ beginning from Thursday 1st September 2022.

He said, “I can assure you that nobody will sleep on the roads anywhere in Anambra because of either an obstruction, a crash or a traffic jam because we are prepared to remove all obstructions as quickly as we can.

“I can also assure you that whatever traffic gridlock situation that comes up will be attended to as soon as we can. We will be working together with the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency and other agencies to get it done in no time. All we appeal for from our people is to be patient and not disobey traffic rules so as not to inconvenience other road users.”

Irelewuyi also told our correspondent that they were getting ready for the busiest part of their assignments in Anambra state which he said were the Ember Months with the expected increase in traffic volumes and with higher probabilities of crashes.

He said they would increase public enlightenment activities for road users to observe the rules and regulations on the safe use of the roads, keep their vehicles in good order and equally observe safety precautions while driving so they can arrive safely to their destinations.

The Sector Commander further disclosed that there were increases in fatalities between the month of April and June this year but noted also that between June and August this year, fatality rates decreased significantly.

He said the expectation henceforth was further reductions in fatal crashes especially as the command has taken delivery of more operational equipment in order to minimize obstructions on the highways; intensify enforcement drives while collaborating with other security agencies, the State Ministry of Transport and others to reduce traffic infractions in Anambra state.
