Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called for sanction against 21 workers in the health sector in the state found with fake certificates.
Zulum gave the directive, on Monday, in Maiduguri, while receiving the report of the verification committee on health workers in the state. A nurse was among workers with fake certificates.
He commended the committee for the discovery of another 91 ghost (non existing) workers in the health sector in the state. He, however, expressed worry that some health workers could use fake certificates, despite the sensitiveness in handling citizens’ health issues.
“According to him “anyone that fakes certificates in nursing and other medical courses is capable of killing people. Only God knows how many people they might have harmed or even killed. Honestly, we should not let this go. We should ensure appropriate actions are served to the culprits,” he said.
Chairman of the committee, Dr. Joseph Jatau, said 91 non existing workers were also discovered on the lists of health workers in the state.
Jatau said the individual had either resigned or withdrawn from service, while salaries were being paid in their names.
He said over N23million was discovered as being wrongly spent every month.
He also disclosed that some dead, retired and absconded staff were still being consistently paid salaries
