The people of Owerre Ebiri in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State have set three suspected notorious robbers terrorising traders in the community on fire after they were caught in the act.
A source from the community narrated that the robbers, who have been in the act for a long time, ambushed traders going and coming back from the market and dispossessed them of their valuables.
But luck ran out of the robbers who were said to be five in number, on Saturday, operating along the roads leading to the market. Three of the robbers were said to have been caught by an angry mob from the community, beaten to stupor before setting them ablaze, while the other two escaped.
Confirming the report, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam, said that the robbers were already burnt to death before their patrol team arrived at the scene.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yarom, has condemned the action by the mob, describing it as barbaric. He advised the community and members of the public to always hand over suspects to the police.
He disclosed that an investigating team from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the command has been set up to investigate the cause and possible ways to prevent future mob actions in the State.
