Nigerian government at all levelshave been called upon to increase welfare package to pensioners  to boost their longevity.

The National Vice President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in the southwest, Elder Ayo Kumapayi made the appeal while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, Osun state capital at the swearing-in ceremony of the state executives.

According to him, the government need to take the welfare of old citizens with uttermost significance because they have contributed their quotas to their fatherland at all levels.

He stressed that, though some governor’s especially in the Southwest are trying their best, but need to still double up their effort in putting smiles into the faces of these aged people.

Kumapayi saluted the effort of Osun state governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola for the prompt payment of pension arrears, urging him to put more effort by paying the backlogs pension arrears.

He equally used the medium to charge the pensioners to always take cognisance of their health status by engaging in the regular check-up.

Speaking earlier, the re-elected state chairman of the union, Alhaji Olasukanmi Ganiyu Salawu thanked governor Oyetola for taking the welfare of the pensioners serious, saying, the pensioners will forever be grateful to the governor for his magnanimity.

Alhaji Salawu urged governor Oyetola to look into the regularization of the pensioners in conformity with the new minimum wage for the sake of equality.

He stressed further that, the pensioners in the state would be glad if the government should foot the bill of yearly pensioners day and provide an 18-seater bus for the smooth running of the union activities in the state.

Salawu also implored the state government to jerk up their monthly payment of pension arrears, adding that, if granted, it would increase the lifespan of most pensioners who are living on drugs.
