The National Assembly is worried by incessant rail track theft in Nigeria and is considering its prevention.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Abdufatai Buhari, who made this known in Lagos during the oversight visit of the Joint National Assembly Committees on Land Transport to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Topmost in the ways of discouraging the unpatriotic act, is the consideration of death sentence for vandals of rail infrastructures.
Buhari decried the increasing cases of vandalization of rail tracks, noting that those involved have the intention to murder as it could cause a train to derail.
Buhari, who lauded the federal government during the inspection of the newly launched Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge train, said the Senate has no issue with taking loans for infrastructural development.
Managing Director of the NRC, Engr. Fidet Okhiria, confirmed that many vandals have been arrested in recent times with several cases ongoing in the courts.
