Peoples Gazette report on theft to mislead the public - EFCC

The claim by Peoples Gazette that an official of the anti-graft agency stole N10.9 billion recovered from the National Intelligence Agency was intended to mislead the public.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, made the clarification in a statement on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Saturday, EFCC’s Head of Media, Wilson Uwujaren said Mohammed was not a staff of the anti-graft agency.

The statement from EFCC reads: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report by an online news medium, Peoples Gazette, alleging that a certain Jafaru Mohammed whom it claimed stole N10.9billion from the NIA Ikoyi loot is an accountant of the EFCC.

“The claim is false and intended to mislead the public.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the EFCC has no accountant by name, Jafaru Mohammed and could not have appointed him to serve in another agency.

“It is infantile to suggest that the Commission would appoint an accountant for the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, which is not a department of the EFCC.

“The public is enjoined to discountenance the report which is dripping with mischief for which Peoples Gazette has become notorious.”

Recall that EFCC had discovered about $43.5 million, £27,800, and N23.2 million inside Apartment 7B, Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos in April 2017.

Later, there were reports that a Brigadier General, Jafaru Mohammed, allegedly stole a chunk of the money to purchase the properties.

Peoples Gazette then reported that Jafaru Mohammed is an accountant of the EFCC.
