Two local government chairmen within Kano metropolitan area are currently being quizzed by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) over their alleged involvement in political thuggery that led to violent clashes in the state.
The two LGA chairmen are Faizu Alfindiki and Bashir Abdullahi Kutama, of Kano municipal and Gwarzo Local Government Areas respectively.
Sources at the Kano command of the DSS, confirmed the development on a condition of anonymity, adding that the LGA bosses were brought in to correct some issues.
It was gathered that the quizzing was connected with the violent clash that broke out at the rally of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Rano on Saturday where at least one person was confirmed dead with several others injured.
It had been reported that the free-for-all fight had broken out when the state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, went to the town to inaugurate party executives for Kano South Senatorial District.
Those allegedly involved in the fracas were said to be supporters of the state’s Commissioner of Local Government Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo, a strong ally of the state governor, and supporters of Kabiru Rurum, a federal lawmaker representing Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure federal constituency, who is also a former Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly.
Both men are believed to be nursing the ambition of becoming governor of the state in 2023.
The police had confirmed that one person lost his life during the fracas but sources in Rano town had estimated those killed to be four.
On Wednesday, operatives of the DSS were said to have swooped in on the two LGA chairmen over allegations that both of them and one other (Khalid Ishaq Diso, chairman of Gwale LGA, who is not yet in custody) were behind some of the political thugs involved in the fracas.
