Gunmen on Thursday evening invaded the palace of Obadu of Ilemeso Ekiti in the Oye Ekiti Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Oba David Oyewumi, and abducted the traditional ruler.
Sources at Ilemeso said that gunmen numbering about six, accessed the palace at about 8.30pm by scaling the fence before they began to shoot sporadically to scare the occupants when the chiefs who visited the place had left..
Another source said, “In the process of shooting, they gained entrance into the bungalow where the traditional ruler and members of his family were.
“The way they asked for the monarch showed that they really came for him and not any other person. Immediately they sighted him, they dragged him out of the palace and whisked him away”, the source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, describing it as regrettable.
“Yes, the incident happened (Thursday night) at the Oba’s palace. We are already doing everything necessary to rescue him and apprehend the culprits
.
“Meanwhile, necessary steps are being taken to rescue him and apprehend the culprits. We are on the trail of the abductors,” the PPRO added.
Sources in Ilemeso told newsmen that six gunmen scaled the Oba’s fence and fired several shots into the air to scare its occupants.
“After they gained entry, the gunmen asked for the king which showed that they really came for him,’’ one of the sources said.
Recall that six days earlier, gunmen waylaid and shot at the Elewu of Ewu Ekiti in the Ilejemeje Council Area of the state, Oba Adetutu Ajayi, along Ewu-Ayetoro Ekiti Road.
