In what now looks like a coordinated operation against the police across states in the Southern part of the country, gunmen in the early hours of Monday, attacked and burnt the
Apumiri Ubakala Police Station in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State killing two policemen in the process.
This occurred about 24 hours after three police officers were reportedly murdered at Nsukwa in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State and their station burnt down.
The attack which occurred despite the 8pm to 6am curfew imposed on parts of Abia State by the state government, was the fifth in the series in the past one week.
SECURITY REPORTERS.com reliably learnt that the gunmen arrived at about 12.10am from different directions to attack the station. But in a swift reaction the policemen on duty were said to have engaged the attackers in gun duel, forcing the gunmen to use explosives which resulted in killing the two cops.
The State Police spokesman Superintendent of Police Geoffrey Ogbonna said he was not in a position to confirm if arms and ammunition were carted away by the gunmen after police took inventory of the armory.
However, he confirmed that vehicles parked at the station including that of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) were set ablaze by the hoodlums.
Equally, criminal suspects inside the station’s cell were said to have been set free by the rampaging gunmen.
Ogbonna called on medical practitioners in and around the state to report anybody with bullet wounds to the nearest police formation, as according to him some of the gunmen escaped with bullet wounds
