Many communities in Kanam local government area of Plateau State have been attacked by armed men.
The worst-hit among the attacked communities is said to be Kukawa which shares a boundary with Bauchi State. Other communities affected are Gyanbahu, Dungur, and Keram.
Some yet to be ascertained number of people have been feared killed and some houses burnt following the Sunday afternoon invasion.
Calls to known phone numbers of Major Ishaku Takwa, the spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, and that of the State Police Command, ASP Gabriel Uba were not picked and as such, none of them confirmed the development at the time of this report.
However, some natives of Kanam residence in Jos confirmed they got information from Kanam that bandits attacked the communities at about 1 pm, shooting sporadically as residents were going about their businesses.
They said scores were killed, many people were injured in the confusion as they scamper to safety, and security agents were yet to get to the communities as of 3pm on Sunday.
Dayabu Garga, Kanam Council Chairman, also confirmed that there is a security breach and he was on his way to Kanam.
He said he had called security agencies who were engaging the criminal elements and there was reinforcement from Jos to ensure the situation is controlled.
The local government area has recorded some security challenges as the wife and daughter of a sitting Commissioner in the State were abducted a few days ago.
