The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has appealed to road users on the need to imbibe safety precautions on the road to make our roads safe and prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

The Commander of FRSC Anambra State Command, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, made the appeal in Awka while speaking on the 2021 World Day for the Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims on Saturday.

The week-long programme has the theme: “Act for Low Speeds/Act for Low Speed Streets.”

This year’s slogan is: “Remember, Support and Act.”

Irelewuyi said: “We want to appeal to road users on the need to imbibe safety precautions on the road to make our roads safe and prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

“Adhere to speed limit, and imbibe a safe-driving culture. Do not yield to the temptation of reckless driving or violation of stipulated speed limit. Speed thrills but it kills too.

“Compliance with safety regulations is the most important thing; we need to comply with the rules to stay alive.

“Let me remind us that road safety is everybody’s business, we need the collaboration and support of government, corporate bodies, religious bodies, traditional rulers, academic institutions and indeed, all and sundry to address the problem of road accidents.”

The Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA), Anambra Sector Command, also visited accident victims at the Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka.

Mrs Anne Eke, Public Relations Officer, ROSOWA, while sympathising with the accident victims also urged motorists to drive with patience, care and courtesy.

“We visit accident victims annually to sympathise and empathise with them as well as give them relief materials.

“So, we are using the World Day for the Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims to urge road users to be more patient while driving and careful while driving,” Eke said.

Mrs Augustina Ezeanoro, Head, Nursing Services, COOUTH, who received the members of ROSOWA on behalf of the hospital’s management thanked the group for their kind gesture.

The World Day for the Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims would be concluded tomorrow at St.Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, with a thanksgiving service and prayer for the souls of the dead.
