The family of late retired Brig.-Gen Adetunji Olurin, on Saturday, announced his death after a brief illness in Lagos.
The former Military Administrator of Oyo State, died at the age 77.
In a statement signed by his son, Mr Babatunde Olurin, on behalf of the family, the late ex-Governor of Oyo State, died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Friday, Aug. 20.
Olurin said that the family, though pained, remained grateful to God because the late Brig.-Gen led a good life.
“It is with a deep sense of loss but gratitude to Almighty God for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of retired Brig.-Gen. Adetunji Idowu Olurin.
“In 27 years of service to the Nigerian Army, Olurin served as the military administrator of Oyo state, the General Officer Commanding, the three armoured division and the ECOMOG field commander in Liberia.
“He also served as the sole administrator of Ekiti and was a governorship candidate in the 2011 Ogun gubernatorial election,” Olurin said.
The late Brig.-Gen Olurin is survived by his wife, Mrs Kehinde Olurin, two sons Babatunde and Olumide Olurin, daughter-in-law, Fehintola Olurin and grandson Demilade Olurin.
The family said that burial arrangements would be announced soon.
Olurin hailed from Ilaro in Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State.
He was the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in the 2011 general election in Ogun State.
Olurin, a Field Commander of ECOMOG Peacekeeping Force in Liberia from 1992 to 1993 during the First Liberian Civil War, retired from service in 1993.
Buhari commiserates with Ogun, Ekiti and Oyo people
President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with government and people of Ogun, Ekiti and Oyo states over passing of former military Governor and Administrator, Gen. Adetunji Idowu Olurin.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina on Saturday, the President joined family, friends and professional colleagues in mourning the military officer, who served the country meritoriously in his career, extending support when he was called upon as military Governor in Oyo State, and later as Administrator in Ekiti State. He also was outstanding as ECOMOG Commander in Liberia.
Buhari noted that Gen. Olurin’s efforts in community development, particularly in his state, Ogun, willingly put his experience and knowledge at the service of various governments.
The President prayed that the Almighty God would grant the departed soul eternal rest, and comfort his family.

Ogun Gov expresses shock
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has joined well meaning Nigerians to mourn the death of the former Military Governor of Oyo State, General Adetunji Idowu Olurin (rtd), who died at the age of 77.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, the Governor expressed shock over the news of the death of Olurin, whom he described as a gallant military officer and astute administrator.
According to the governor who expressed shock over the news of Olurin’s death, it occurred at a time the country and Ogun State needed his security expertise in tackling various security challenges confronting the nation.
Abiodun added that the late General was an illustrious son of Ogun State, who put the state and Nigeria on the global map with his exploits when he served as the ECOMOG Commander in Liberia.
“General Olurin of the popular Olurin Family in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state served Nigeria and ECOWAS in many capacities.
“He was Military Governor of Oyo State and later Civilian Administrator of Ekiti State after retirement. He was also Chancellor of Nigeria’s first University of Education – Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, Ijebu Ode.
“At the international level, he was ECOMOG Commander.
“General Olurin, who was the Commander, 1st Mechanized Brigade, Minna, GOC, 3rd Armoured Division, Jos, also lectured on peacekeeping at the International Peace Academy, the National War College, and United Nations seminars in Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal.
“As a recipient of many honours including the United Nations Peace Medal and the Knight Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption (KCHOAR), Liberia’s highest national honour award, as well as an honorary Paramount Chief of the Republic of Liberia, he had made Ogun stand out, not only the country, but at the global level.
“On behalf of my family and the people of Ogun State, I commiserate with the entire Olurin Family of Ilaro. The demise of one of Nigeria’s finest military officers is a painful loss to our state and the country.
“We shall continue to remember the late General for his meritorious service to his fatherland as well as statesmanship. He shall be sorely missed not only by his family and kinsmen in Ilaro, but the entire people Ogun, and by extension Nigeria.
“I pray the Almighty God rest his soul, forgive his shortcomings and grant his family members fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,”.Abiodun was quoted to have said in the statement.
Olurin, a committed officer and elder statesman – Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the late Olurin as a committed officer and elder statesman who served his country passionately.
In a condolence message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday, Sanwo-Olu commiserated with the Governor, and entire people of Ogun State, especially indigenes of Ilaro on the demise of their illustrious son.
He praised Olurin’s contributions to governance in Oyo and Ekiti States during his tenure as Military Governor and Sole Administrator in the two states respectively.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I want to express my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and associates of the late Brigadier-General Adetunji Olurin (rtd) as well as the Nigerian Army, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun and the entire people of the State.
“He was a committed military officer. He fought, along with several other patriots tirelessly for a united Nigeria as well as ECOMOG during his days in the Nigerian Army.
“I pray that God will grant Brigadier-General Adetunji Olurin (rtd) eternal rest and give the immediate family, friends, Nigerian Army and the people of Ilaro and Ogun State the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Governor Sanwo-Olu prayed.
