Tajudeen Amololo, the 59-year-old staff of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA Drain Ducks, trapped for five days inside an underground drainage in the Onipanu area of the state has been rescued dead.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) announced the recovery of the dead body of Amololo in a statement on Friday.
Amololo got trapped while trying to clear a blocked portion of the underground drainage to allow for the free flow of water.
LASEMA had received a distress call from residents and bystanders at Onipanu Bus Stop, indicating that a drain duck man working for LAMATA got trapped in the underground tunnel.
The LASEMA Permanent secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement said efforts to rescue the LAMATA staff from the underground tunnel alive failed despite the best efforts of his agency for five days.
Osanyintolu said Amololo was rescued dead as at the evening on Friday.
“After five days of painstaking, tedious and energy sapping operation, the team remained determined and focused on the rescue operation.
“At about 5:53pm on Friday, May 10, the victim was recovered dead from the underground drainage and tunnel.
“The recovered body was immediately bagged by the agency’s officials and handed over to LAMATA Drain Ducks,” he said.
