Allow Amotekun Corps play traditional roles during 2023 general elections – Commander

The Commander of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, Brig. Gen. Bashir Biodun Adewinmbi (Rtd), has reacted to the ruling of the court that barred the corps from participating in the Osun governorship election.

Adewinmbi said Amotekun is a regional security outfit and should be allowed to play its traditional roles.

He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari-led’s government to allow the Amotekun Corps to play their traditional roles during the general elections in 2023.

Adewinmbi said: “We appeal to the Federal Government to allow us to carry out our traditional roles in the 2023 general elections, especially in all South West geo-political zones.

“Ordinarily we do not interfere with voting processes but we must be allowed to help in the areas of securing our borders during elections.

“Our agency has enough capacity to stop the illegal movement of arms during elections and also to protect the lives and properties of the people.”

Speaking on the court ruling that barred the corps from the Osun governorship election, the Amotekun boss said; “It is not good enough.”

“Amotekun took part in Ekiti, Ondo, so why Osun?”

Adewinmbi, however, noted the election in his polling unit (Polling Unit o06 Oloba-Atapara, Ward 01) had been peaceful.

He said: “It is going very well and smoothly. I am sure you have moved around, no vote-buying is allowed here, people must be allowed to vote who they want.”
