Many worshippers particularly children on  Tuesday evening have been reportedly trapped as a church building collapsed along the popular Okpanam Road in Asaba, Delta State capital.
The collapsed building is located opposite Rain Oil Okpanam road by Noble Academy.
The building, housing the Asaba branch of Salvation Ministries, was said to have caved in during evening church service.
Salvation Ministries is owned by popular Nigerian pastor, Bishop David Ibiyeomie, with headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was gathered that construction works is ongoing in part of the church building before the ugly incident took place.
A woman who pleaded anonymity and her daughter were victims but were rescued from under the rubbles unhurt.
Sources told our Correspondent that children were mostly affected by the collapse because the impact was more  on  children section.
Our sources further gathered that some of the trapped victims have been rescued and rushed to hospital for treatment.
“Some corpses mostly of children have been recovered by rescue team. Some of the survivors have been rushed to hospital. It was the children section that caved in”, one of the sources told our correspondent.
However, unconfirmed reports had it that one person was confirmed dead while many others including children were still being trapped in the one storey building.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command through its spokesman, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but could not immediately give casualty figures.
Edafe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), also confirmed that many of the victims have been rescued and evacuated to medical centres in the state capital for treatment.
